Book Description

Clear explanations of basic concepts, a healthy balance between classical and modern numerical methods, modeling of structural systems, computer programs and tools, these are the keys to a mastering Structural Analysis and Design. Now they are all at your fingertips in this text.

With a constant focus on the fundamentals, Introduction to Structural Analysis & Design takes you step-by-step through the entire design process, from turning a client's requirement into a mathematical model of the structural systems, to analyzing and evaluating the performance of the proposed structure, to the process of redesign.

Throughout, the text concentrates on a limited set of highly versatile and powerful classical techniques and numerical methods, so you can master what's currently being used in the field today. Numerous examples establish a strong link between structural analysis and design, including optimal design. The companion website features two programs for finite element analysis and optimal design, GS-USA© and UNDO©, along with additional problems and resource material.

Good Structures Reference
By johnnyb588

If you're buying this book, chances are you don't have a choice. You're at ASU, and you have to take Rajan's course. Don't get down, the class isn't as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. But, if you want to do well in the class, I would highly suggest getting the book. If not for personal study in your free time, definitely for the in-class, open-book quizzes.

It's a pretty good reference for general structures information, and Rajan is fairly clear in his descriptions and gives fair examples of the topics covered in the text. GS-USA is pretty much useless outside of Rajan's class, so if you're not in the class and are expecting something great from the software included in this book, you might want to look somewhere else. It's something fun to analyze trusses/bridges with, but I am not positive its usefulness extended much beyond that. I would recommend holding onto this book for any civil engineer who has it. It's a valuable reference for the basics, and I've used it outside of Rajan's class multiple times.

Amazing textbook

This book is great for understanding structural analysis. It is well laid out with plenty of examples and a huge number of practice problems. It was suggested but not required for a course I took, it made the course infinitely easier. Amazing value at this price.
