About the Author

Dr. Katsuhiko Ogata graduated from the University of Tokyo (BS), earned an MS degree from the University of Illinois, and his Ph.D from the University of California, Berkeley. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota.

Good book

This was the textbook for my controls class in college. Its a good book with a lot of information but I found some explanations complicated. I had to research some things online to get better explanations.

As far as controls textbooks go, it seems to be pretty good. The examples in the book (so far) are helpful with completing the homework problems. Lots of MATLAB examples are also included.

This may not be the best book for a first undergraduate course in control, but is surely the most comprehensive. I used this book as a reference to supplement the book by Norman Nise and enjoyed solving the problems as the exercises in Nise were pretty straightforward. The book also provides MATLAB code to various problems. The treatment of the root locus and the frequency response is top notch. Controller design also has been discussed in a chapter. The chapter on PID controller tuning and various tuning algorithms is useful to know, though it may not be covered in a first course. All in all, a very good book to have.
