The book features extensive coverage of the modeling and simulation of physical systems made possible by block-diagrams, the modified analogy approach to modeling, and state-of-the-art visual simulation software. A collection of case studies drawn from a variety of industries (complete with parts, lists, setup, and instructions) are used to support the authors' applied, design-oriented approach. Readers of this text will be equipped with all the tools necessary to plan, test, and implement a well-designed mechatronic system.

About the Author

Dean Devdas Shetty joined University of the District of Columbia in 2012, having previously served as Dean of Engineering at Lawrence Technological Institute and Dean of Research at the University of Hartford. While with the University of Hartford, Dr. Shetty was first Chair of the Vernon D. Roosa Endowed Professorship. In addition, he was the Director of the Engineering Applications Center, through which he established partnerships with more than 50 Connecticut industries. During 2008 and 2009, Dr. Shetty served as Dean of the College of Engineering for Lawrence Technological University in Michigan . During that time, he initiated several new academic programs, established partnerships and contributed to curricular innovation. Prior to coming to Hartford, Dr. Shetty held academic positions at the Albert Nerkin School of Engineering at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. He is the author of three books and more than 200 scientific articles and six patents.

Richard Kolk is Senior Vice President, Engineering & Technology, of PaceControls. He is a Willis Carrier Fellow and commercial control engineering manager. During his 23-year career with United Technologies and Carrier Corporation, Mr. Kolk has lead PaceControls' research and development team in the development of next-generation products, and in its ongoing joint product development activities. Mr. Kolk earned a B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Connecticut, and an M.S.E.E. degree from California State University-Long Beach. He served as an adjunct professor for over 20 years at the University of Hartford, where he was awarded the Gordon Clark Ramsey Award for Creative Teaching Excellence.

I've read it two year ago. Now that I have graduated and look back, I count it as one of the pillars my knowledge is based on. Its fun reading this book, atleast first 3/4 portions.

Still, read the contents before buying it. Your course outline is more important so match the contents first.

good overview of modeling of physical systems

Despite the other reviews, I found this book to be a good introductory balance of math and practical advice. It examines electrical, mechanical, rotational, translational, and fluid systems. There are nice pictures to accompany the math and text. It is written as a class text with review questions at the end of each chapter. There are good discussions on various transducers and actuators with both theory and practical operation tips. This is a good introductory text. The included software isn't too bad either!
